Gear pump is a type of positive displacement pump where the fluid will flow through the gaps of the gear with the walls of the house. Referred to as a pump because the fluid flowed is generally in the form of liquid or slurry. While the positive displacement pump means that the pump sucks a number of trapped fluids which are then pressed and moved towards the output. Gear pump is often used for hydrolic fluid power applications. However, not infrequently it is also used in the chemical field to drain fliuda at certain viscosities. There are two types of gear pumps, namely the external gear pump and the internal gear pump. This pump is classified as fixed displacement because the amount of fluid flowed every round is always fixed.

For how to work the external Gear pump works by how to drain the fluid through the gaps between the teeth and the wall. Then the fluid is released through the outlet channel due to the nature of the gear wheel which always has a point of contact. An ideal gear pair will always have a point of contact with its partner even though the gear is rotating. This is what the gear pump mechanism uses to drain fluid. In other words, ideally the fluid will not enter through the contact point of the gear pair.

Besides that the internal gear pump works by utilizing the inner gear which is usually connected to the drive and the outer gear which usually acts as an idler. Initially the fluid enters through the suction port between the rotor (large gear) and idler (small gear). The fluid then enters through the gaps in the gear. A crescent shaped part divides the fluid and acts as a seal between suction and discharge port. The fluid that floods the discharge port will continue to be driven by the fluid behind it so that the fluid continues to flow.
