Lightning arrester is a safety device that protects the network and equipment against abnormal voltage that occurs due to lightning strikes (flash over) and because of the surge surges (switching surge) on a network. This lightning arrester gives a greater opportunity for more abnormal voltage to be passed to the ground before these safety devices damage network equipment such as tansformators and insulators. Therefore lightning arresters are voltage sensitive devices, their use must be adjusted to the system voltage.


Lightning arrester or abbreviated as arrester is a protective device for electrical power system equipment against solar lightning. This protective device against solar disturbances functions to protect electrical power system equipment by limiting the overvoltage surges that come and drain it to the ground.


Due to its function, Arrester must be able to withstand a 50 Hz system voltage for a limited time and must be able to pass current surges to the ground without damage. Arrester acts as a shortcut around isolation. Arrester forms a path that is easy to travel by lightning or lightning currents, so there is no high overvoltage in the equipment.
