Lightning rod is a series of pathways that function as a path for lightning to the surface of the earth, without damaging the objects through it. There are 3 main parts to the lightning rod:

1. Lightning Rod



Lightning rods in the form of copper rods with pointed edges. Made pointed because the electric charge has the nature of easily assembling and loose on the pointed metal tip.

Thus it can facilitate the process of attraction with an electric charge that is in the cloud. This pointed rod is mounted on the top of a building.

2. Conductor Wire

Conductor wire is made of braided copper wire. The diameter of the braided conductor cable is about 1 cm to 2 cm. The conductor cable functions to continue the flow of electric charge from the electric charge rod to the ground. The conductor wire is mounted to the wall on the outside of the building.

3. Grounding (Grounding System)

The grounding (grounding) function is to conduct an electric charge from the conductor cable to the ground rod that is embedded in the ground.

Earthing rods are made of copper-coated steel, with a diameter of 1.5 cm and a length of about 1.8 - 3 m.
Ways of working
When the negative electrical charge at the bottom of the cloud is fulfilled, the positive electric charge on the ground will be immediately attracted. The electric charge then immediately travels up through the conductor cable, towards the end of the lightning rod. When the negative electrical charge is close enough to the roof, the attraction between the two charges gets stronger, the positive charge at the ends of the lightning rod being pulled towards the negative charge. The second meeting of the charge produces electricity.

The electricity will flow into the ground, through conductor cables, so that lightning strikes do not hit the building. But lightning strikes can travel into buildings through electrical wire and the danger can damage electronic devices in buildings that are connected to the electricity network, but they can also cause a fire or explosion.

To prevent damage due to lightning struck by the electricity network, usually inside the building is fitted with a device called an electric current stabilizer (surge arrestor).
